How to get the most from mock tests

A mock test is only as useful as the analysis that follows it. How to sit, review and track mocks so every one improves your score.

Mock tests are the closest thing to the board exam you can practise. Used well, they show exactly where marks are being lost. Used badly, they become a score you look at once and forget. Here is how to make every mock count.

Before the test: recreate exam conditions

  • Sit the full paper in one go, for the same length of time as the real exam.
  • Keep your phone, notes and textbook out of reach.
  • Use the same stationery and answer layout you will use in the exam.

During the test: practise your strategy

Use the first few minutes to read the paper and plan. Decide which questions to attempt first — usually the ones you are most confident about — and keep an eye on the time you spend on each section. Mark any question you skip so you can come back to it. The aim is to rehearse the strategy you will use on exam day, not just to answer questions.

After the test: the analysis matters most

The score is only the starting point. Go through every question where you lost marks and sort it:

  • Didn’t know the concept — revisit the chapter.
  • Knew it, but made an error — add it to your mistake log.
  • Ran out of time — practise that question type with a timer.
  • Misread the question — slow down when reading and underline what is asked.

Then redo every question you got wrong, without looking at the solution, before the next mock.

Track your progress across tests

One mock is a snapshot; a series of mocks shows a trend. Record your score, the time you finished and the type of mistakes in each test. If the same chapter keeps costing marks, that is your priority for the next week.

This is why a structured test series helps: chapter tests reveal weak topics early, and full-length mocks closer to the exam test your timing and stamina across the whole syllabus.
